About Artist William M. Sullivan
William (Billy) M. Sullivan has been painting the American landscape for over 25 years. His paintings have appeared in galleries and museums throughout the country. Mr. Sullivan captures nature in isolation, where dramatic cliffs, waves, clouds, and light are the only focus. Sullivan currently lives in Austin, Texas, with his family, where he works for Edge of Reality, a computer game company, and continues to depict extraordinary landscapes on canvas.
Billy Sullivan has always reached for the widest perspectives. In one of his more famous paintings, Aerial View of Orange County, he moves the observation point even further back than those of 19th-century landscapes from mountain tops. He thereby highlights “the key ingredient that makes this type of scene so appealing: the evidence, in the ordered buildings and tilled fields, of man’s harmonious union with nature”(Kelly and Rasmussen, The Virginia Landscape, p.190). This humanizing of the landscape avoids the monotony of purely wild, “sublime” scenery and achieves a true standard of the picturesque without losing any of the grandeur.
In his more recent landscapes from the West Coast, Billy Sullivan has drawn near to the same source of inspiration as his great mentor Wayne Thiebaud, whose lively canvases “turn reality into art, by tilting and balancing lines and shapes to give them abstract energy”

“…Virginia landscape settings exude a certain non-naturalistic spell despite their verisimilitude…”
“…appear to have stepped directly into a contemporary countryside from the pages of Renaissance art history books…”
